RETURNING TO MIDWAY

The day was bright and beautiful.  We left our hotel and walked north down Michigan Avenue to the Hancock Building where we went up 92 floors and looked out over the City.  We also did the Tilt where the sides of the glass rotate out over the building.

We went to Giordanias for stuffed pizza.

We visited the famous Garrett's popcorn.

Our first family we visited was Karina, her mother, and her children Axel, Emily

Our next visit was to the Gusemond family.  They had parrots that talked the whole time.

We went to the stake center on Pulanski where we saw the Midway Ward.  Before Garrett went in he told us he may not be too remembered.  Not so, he was a rock star.  We went in to the meeting that was kind of like a missionary homecoming.  The Bishop conducting asked if Garrett would come and bear his testimony.  Sweetest.  Afterwards he was swarmed by people that adored and loved him.  Garrett had been a zone leader in this area and then his final six week transfer as a junior companion.

Picture with the missionaries serving in the Midway ward.  We forwarded this to the missionaries' parents for an early Thanksgiving present.

Ricardo shook our hands at least 3 or 4 times - the cutest.  Adilia and Omar

At about 9:00 we went and visited the Rojas family.  This is where Garrett lived while he was zone leader in Midway.
We met and their cutest kids, Santi (Santiago),

We also drove by Garrett's last apartment on his mission in Midway.  Hhhmmm.  Good thing we didn't know how bad it really was in condition and safety.

SUNDAY IN CHICAGO

Our first stop was the Midway Ward.  We were able to say goodbye to many friends and families.  Before we left we pulled out Flor who was one of Elder Eichers' contacts he made with Elder Lee.  We sat by the Rojas family.

Our next stop was the Chicago 4th Ward.  We saw the Liconas, Bishop Rublacava from the other ward, and many families.  The mission leader talked about how Elder Eichers had found him on the street when he had come from Mexico and helped him find his way to the ward.

Our last stop was at Lizbeth and Oscar's home.  We chatted and they made some yummy mexican food.  We had a chance to meet their whole family, including the grandparents and Oscar's brother.

YSAs AND MILWAUKEE WEDDING

Steph, Sam and Baby El flew out at 7:00 a.m. to meet Sam's family in Florida for a surprise trip for Sam's Dad's 60th Birthday.    We slept in and were just hoping they made their flight.

Garrett served as the assistant to the President for six months.  He served with English speaking elders, Elder Foster and then Elder Zacher.  They served in a YSA ward.  On Saturday morning, we met some of them, Jackie (who was baptized), Karen, and Mitch.  We met them at Bongos for breakfast.  Small world but Sister Mousser, who was a Sister Training Leader, was there with her family.

After breakfast we went and visited James who had been baptized while Garrett was there.

We rested a bit and then checked out the Eataly restaurant that was across the street from our hotel.  We then got in costumes to go to Aly and Drew's wedding in Milwaukee Wisconsin.  Drew was activated and Aly was baptized while Garrett was in the YSA ward.  We were dying that no one was going to be in costumes, but pretty much most people were wearing some costume from different time periods.  It was very theatrical and different.  However, it fit them perfectly.

We came home exhausted.  It was a good experience for us to understand how exhausting it was for Garrett and to always be going and trying to be on your "A game".

THANKSGIVING

From our hotel we walked South along Michigan Avenue to Millenial Park and visited the "Bean."  We got some photos.  We also were drenched by rain.  It was good to see how fast and wet Chicago rain can be so we could better understand Garrett's experiences.  It was so wet that Garrett's cell phone got ruined while being in his waterproof jacket.   He said he was missing his missionary block phone that was indestructible.  We were so wet  (pants, shoes, coats) we had to come back to our hotel to totally change clothes for Thanksgiving dinner.

We at dinner at Edivi's.  It was right next to our hotel.  We had traditional Thanksgiving.  It was yummy and filling.  The kids weren't feeling very well, so Brad, Brenda and Garrett went to see two families while the rest of the family rested.  We visited Chincillas that included hermana Marian Chinchilla, her husband Vasile (from Romania) and their senior daughter, Alison.

We then went and visited the Roblacava's, the family that Garrett lived with for his first apartment.   Garrett lived on the upstairs floor and lived there with Elder Gomez and then Elder Dussan.   The Dad, Milka Roblacava, was the Bishop in Chicago 5th Ward, but the Elders in that apartment were in Chicago 3rd ward.  We visited with the family, but the Dad had to work.   The two girls (), mom, and Alex (who is ready to put his papers in for his mission).

We drove back to Chicago City and picked up the rest of the family to visit more.  We first visited the Armandez family from Chicago 4th Ward, Garrett's second area where he served with Elder Martinez and Elder Lee.  The son and dad are Miguel, and the daughter and mom are Marisol.  We loved visiting with them.  They were so sweet to baby Eleanor.

Finally, that evening we Rosa's (Dominican Republic and Chicago 4th Ward) home where she and the Liconas made us the yummiest Thanksgiving dinner.  The Liconas family was all there with the exception of Lucy who was at BYU- Idaho with her new husband.  They had Garrett over to dinner many evenings.  Duvy is a fabulous cook!!  The food was all yummy.

We also drove by Elder Eichers' apartment while he was in Chicago 4th Ward.  It was an apartment building on a main road.

RETURNING TO CHICAGO WITH THE FAMILIA

Garrett was so excited to return home to Chicago.  Everyone in our family went.  Garrett loved flying into Chicago and seeing the city lights and the perfectly gridded city. El didn't love the flight and cried most of the way.  Garrett was pretty excited that we rented a van just like the one he drove in Chicago.  Brad drove the whole trip with Garrett the navigator and also the teacher of the Chicago slide.  We checked into the Marriott on Magnificent Mile.   What a beautiful street all dressed up for the holidays.

PHOTO SHOOTS

This week was fantastic!  We had so many great experiences but the best one of all was that a man named Raul was baptized! He is in the other area I was in in Midway and it was such a sweet experience. His whole family has been being baptized recently and he finally received his answer. It is amazing because missionaries have been going on and off for a while but just recently was when he decided to pray with faith and that was when he received his answer.  I do not have the photo but I will send them next week!

All of the plans sound great for when I get home! Can we go to the Salt Lake Temple though?? For some reason I just really want to go there, being away from Salt Lake has made me have such more desire to go to that temple!  If it is too busy we can go wherever but that would be amazing to go there!

I started saying goodbye to a lot of families this week as well like a few from Chi 3..  I have a lot of fun stories but the pictures will explain them the best so I will just send those!

JAMES' BAPTISM

James' Baptism this week was amazing!!  But the spirit was so strong at James' baptism, I just felt so much love for him! It was great because even though it was the Friday before the 4th of July so many members of the ward came and supported him! It was so sweet to see! The baptism went smoothly and my favorite part was at the end, he got up and bore his testimony and just talked about how God sent him to this church for a reason and about how his life has changed. He then ended his testimony with Woohoo! I love him so much because I have learned so much from him, although the times went up and down with his teaching he made it to that first step and now it is just going to go up hill from here! After the meeting he went around and gave every single person that came a hug, it was great!

This was James baptism last week, he was baptized by Bishop K.  That is also Elder Potter and Elder Zacher.

For my birthday this week we just went with a few of the members, we had a few different cakes and it was just a chill birthday! It was nothing huge but it was definitely one of the best ones I have had because we worked so hard! It was sweet though because that night we had a huge miracle, we were walking down the street that we had a few potential investigators on and as we were walking down the street these two kids that we had talked to twice before who are like 9 and 6 came running down the street to us! They got to us right in front of the house that a couple was standing outside of and they were a little shocked that the kids loved us so much so the wife asked us what we did! Before we really even said anything she just started bearing testimony of God.  We set up a return appointment but her mom went into the hospital so she had to cancel but it was such a huge miracle because she asked us who we were! The two kids weren't even theirs too so it was birthday present from the Lord!

The apartment is alright, we have basically just come to the fact that it will only get so clean Hahahaha.

That is crazy that it is time to go already.  I can't believe it has been 2 years. Thank you for getting the phone and everything ready.   I was also wondering if you could set up a hair appointment with Brooke, if she even still does that? And also, I was thinking that I will just get rid of my garments so can you get me some new ones for home?  Everything is great here though, I am just trying to enjoy every minute of things. It doesn't seem real to me yet that I am leaving though, it just feels like a normal time.  I have mixed feelings about everything though because I am going to miss it so much here but I am excited to go home as well! I am just happy to be able to relax and hang out for a little again ;)

I hope you have a great day today though mom! I love you so so much!

These are straight up to the funniest/sassiest/cutest girls on the whole planet. It is Lily in the left and Rosy in the overalls.  They are the family Reyes granddaughters. We are best friends with them.

HAPPY 20TH BIRTHDAY!

Thank you for wishing me a happy birthday!!  Our address is 2535 w 46 pl Chicago IL, I dont know what the zip code is though! We live in a house on the first floor, it is pretty gross on the inside but we have cleaned it up a ton so it is much better to live in now! It feels like home now although it isn't the nicest place! We do not live with members, though there are just a few men that live in the basement.  I would just send stuff to the mission office though because I am not sure it is too safe outside.  Please don't send too much though because I only have so little time I can use it.
My companion's name is Elder Nunez though! He is so sweet and we are having so much fun together! He is from Los Angeles CA but his family is from Honduras! We already know each other really well because our areas have always been overlapping.  Last time when I was in Midway, he started to cover the Hyde Park YSA so that is the ysa down south here.  Then we both flipped up to the north side and I was in the Lake Shore YSA so I covered his area in Chi 3 and now we are together! For all of the 9 months that he has been out on a mission we have covered the same places! He also has had a lot of the same companions as me, he was trained by Elder Martinez so now I have hit their whole family line of trainers with the Abuelo (Elder Perez), Elder Martinez (Dad) and Elder Nunez (son).  We are having a great time together and we are working really hard, he is the district leader here in Midway! He is hilarious!
Aly's baptism was amazing though! It was definitely the highlight of my week! It was so sweet because it was at the Wilmette Stake Center and the font there is huge! I loved getting to go there and watch it! It was great as well because her parents came down from Milwaukee to see it and it was their first time they had come to the church! Aly had talked to her parents and there were some mixed feelings about everything so it was so great that they came and they were very supportive of her! Drew was able to baptize her and they confirmed her right on the spot because she wasn't going to be able to go to church that Sunday! She was a golden investigator for sure.  Right after I left that area Elder Zacher and Elder Potter taught her in a member's home with Elder Martino who is in the 70 and also President Woodbury.   Elder Martino just talked about how prepared and how solid she was! She is amazing!

James is also going to be baptized this Friday so I am excited for that!

My stomach is feeling good though, no problems!   And I think my flight should be at like 8 am here time but I don't know the exact time, that is when it normally goes.  They will probably send it out soon though.

Other than that it was just a pretty normal and great week overall.  Many small miracles that just make every day better!

PICTURES!!!!

This week has been fantastic!! Everything is going great and I am loving being back in Midway!! There are so many miracles!! I am so sorry that I have been so bad at writing but today is Elder Dussan's birthday so we are going to Cheesecake Factory and I am using the gift card you gave me a while ago! I have tons of pictures to make up for it though!
Here is a picture of the Vazquez when we went and saw them last week before going to the south side. (inserts(

RAINING IN MIDWAY

Tell Dad Happy Father's Day for me! Yesterday I wore my Fast Sunday tie and everything for him!! When we were in church though yesterday I realized how much I love all of you and how grateful I am for everything you all do!! But to answer your extending question:  I don’t think I am going to do it now.  It looked like there were going to be a lot of things happening right after I left with the Vazquez family and also Karina and her family but now it doesn't look like it is going to happen so I will probably just go home on the assigned day.  I have been thinking about it a lot but it doesn't make as much sense anymore for me to do it! I am really happy though that I am coming home this transfer because the timing is so much better! And now you don't have to worry because I know I probably scared you pretty bad! I am going to keep the option open but I will most likely just go home.

Your vacation looks like so much fun though!! I am so jealous about the huskies!! They are so dang cute!! So the one time I'm gone you guys go through the alps instead of the museums??? Hahaha..

Everything here has been so great!! I am loving being back in Midway!!  The weather here has been crazy though! I swear it has rained every day for the past like two weeks! For part of the day it will be sunny and nice and then clouds will come out of nowhere and just drench us! Last Monday we went downtown for Pday and it was like a 7 or 8 mile bike ride from where we are at so it is not too far but on the way back right when we got on our bikes it just started pouring rain!! After like 30 seconds we were already soaked all of the way through so it was pretty fun because at that point we didn't care if we got wet anymore! It was funny though because we were just riding through the rain and the Tornado sirens were going off and we were just riding through hahaha! It was way fun though because we were just going through all of the puddles and we were soaked!

Midway is amazing though!! I feel like I never even left here and I just love it so much!! Today for lunch we went over to Karina Huicocheas house with the elders in their pasole and then they also got me a big cake for my birthday!! It was so nice of them and I loved being there with them!! I just love their family so much! I told Karina that if they ever want to come to Utah they are invited!! I love her and her family so much!!We have seen so many miracles here in this Ward though! One of the biggest miracles that we saw was that last week, the members gave us the names of a few families who are less active to go and stop by and so last Sunday we tried one of them at like 4:30 and nobody was home, later that night at like 8 we had stopped by almost all of the people we had planned and then we were talking and we decided to go back! So we go back and as we are locking our bikes up in front of the house their car pulls up, we didn't know if it was them or not but they get out and we ask for Isabel and Brenda Morales and it was them! We ended up helping them bring all of their groceries in and we got to know them better and they just opened up completely to us! They talked about how the husband/dad has been sick for 13 years and has had  tons of surgeries and that in the last year and more the members of the Ward had stopped visiting them and they felt abandoned.  When I heard this it broke my heart completely but we talked to them and now we are going over twice a week and his week we brought the sacrament to them since they both can't leave at the same time because they have to be watching the husband/dad and now we are helping  them feel more of Gods love again! It is so amazing and it was a miracle!  We have seen so many other great miracles but that is one of the biggest!

Also, Elder Martino of the 70 came this week! It is crazy because he came my second transfer her in the field and now he came back! He fired up the mission so much though so hopefully we see a huge increase in the work here!

Aly is getting baptized tomorrow as well!! It will be in the font at the stake center which is absolutely hugell! Her parents are coming down and everything and I am so excited! Also Drew proposed to her like 2.5 weeks ago while they were at Disney
World! I am so happy and I can't wait for tomorrow!!

TRANSFERS ARE HARDD!!!!

From Von and Carolyn Christensen's Blog:  TRANSFERS ARE HARD - especially when you have enjoyed knowing the missionaries in your area.

A change in AP's.  Two stay and one goes.    Elder Eichers has been here the longest, so he will go back out in the field.  The one in the middle will stay with Elder Zacher who has been here the shortest time.
These three are great young men - obedient - good leaders - hard workers - and fun to be around.  Of course they all have a strong testimony of what they are doing here. They bring people to Christ and which makes those people happier....and makes their Heavenly Father happy.

A SWEET WEEK

Memorial Day was great but we didn't get any pictures haha.  That is so crazy that everyone is coming home already!! I am trying to think about home as little as possible but it is so hard because everyone always asks us about it.  Its weird to think that the bishopric is getting redone because we were talking about that this week when missionaries go back to wards and stakes that are different!

But this week was fantastic!! Finally everything in our area is really starting to kick off! Aly and Drew are doing great, this weekend they are in Disney World and they said they are just loving it there as well! She is all ready for her baptism and her family is set to come!  Her mom was wanting her to move it back (this was a few weeks ago) and she told her mom that she couldn't wait until September because “her Elders" were leaving so that was a sweet moment!! I just love her and Drew so much!!  Also Diego came to church this week, he was only able to come for the first hour and a half but he made it so that was sweet!

Some of the best news was the news that came earlier today.  So today for Pday we went and played basketball early this morning and there were quite a few elders there but we were with the elders in my first area and they said that they are teaching the Reyes family again and that the daughter Jaylen is on date for our last week here!! It made me so happy to hear that there family is coming together again!! My whole week has been made and it is only Monday!!

We have transfers this week as well so we will start tomorrow working on them. I feel like I am going to be leaving but I am not sure yet so next week I will let you know what happens!  I hope that you have a great day!! :)

PLAYING A LOT ON MEMORIAL DAY

This week was great! And yes our Pday is today! It is nice because it is finally a holiday that we can play on so today a lot of our members are free and there are lots of things going on! Nothing super special happened this week though, just the normal! I am sorry that this weeks letter is really short but we are playing a lot today so I don't have a lot of energy to write! I am happy though! 😌

Von and Carolyn Christensen: TEMPLE ZONE TRIP TO CHICAGO TEMPLE

We were able to attend a Zone Temple Trip with these great missionaries.  Twice a year the missionaries have this opportunity - May and December. Each of eight zones attend the temple in the morning, have lunch at the mission home, then have a testimony meeting. We are part of the Willmette East Zone according to the ward we attend.  Hopefully, in the next two weeks, we will be able to share this experience with other zones.

The Mission President and Temple President addressed this group in the temple chapel and in the sealing room, confirming to them how important the sealing ordinance is in our eternal progression.  We are grateful our President wants these young people to have these unique teaching experiences.

We did endowments and sealings.  Some of our missionaries had never witnessed a sealing before, and that proved to be a wonderful experience.  Von and I were able to be proxies for one sealing. Two missionaries were witnesses, and three acted as proxies for children.  As we listened to the discussion in the sealing room, we were filled with gratitude for our own sealing 45 and a half years ago...and also the sealings of our dear children as they were adopted into our family.  Thinking of these sealings always fills us with hope and joy.

Von and Carolyn Christensen: MISSION OFFICE, BEAUTIFUL CHICAGO BURBS

Another picture of the Glenview State Bank Building that houses our office.  We are at the far end of this building
on the second floor.

With the help of the AP's, they moved the
refrigerator in the closet to make it easier
to get into.  Elder Eichers is a great help
in the office when we need
things moved

Regardless of where we are in the suburbs, forest preserves and woods line many of the streets.  Though we know we live in this small area with millions of people, greenery is important, and these roadside forests and woods pop up all over

BOOK OF MORMON PLAY AND MIRACLES

This week we had a great week and it went by so fast! But yes we did get to go to the temple this week but we only went with our zone! It was so amazing to go and we also got to see some sealings! A few of the senior couples did them so that we could watch and also President and Sister Woodbury! I loved being able to see them because I had never watched one before!

We also had some huge miracles this week as well for the work in our area! We have been struggling lately to find new investigators for a while and we keep setting goals and praying but just nothing was working. It was a little sad because we have been doing so much contacting and we can get lots of people's information just nobody was turning into new investigators! We just keep working and working though and the Lord is really starting to bless us! On Tuesday we were on exchanges so I stayed in our area and I was with a missionary named Elder Alvey! We were contacting in the trains for a while that morning and nothing special was really happening but as we were getting off the train to get onto another one there was his guy who was waiting for us. We hadn't seen him while we were on the train because we were talking to others but we get off and he stops us and he was like "you look way familiar" to me. In my mind I was just thinking oh that's random but maybe he had seen me on a train before. But then he said he spent last thanksgiving and around Christmas with me and I was so confused! He then said that he was family with Carmen who we taught in Midway and that he knew Juan Perez!! He remembered me although I had only seen him one time before!!! It was so crazy because he made a special effort to talk with us and he happens to be a young single adult going to school on the north side now so he fits perfectly into our area! We have an appointment to teach him tomorrow and we are so excited! It was such a miracle!

Yesterday, we had stake conference so that was great to be able to see everyone but we had another huge miracle! At Stake conference we were introduced to this guy named Diego, he has been here from Colombia for a few weeks and he is staying with his aunt! His aunt is just reactivated in the Chi 3 Ward but he is super interested in learning about the church and coming to the YSA Ward! It's sweet too because he speaks mainly Spanish so it is a huge testiment to me of why I am in this area!! It is such a miracle and we are so excited to meet with him his week! The Lord is blessing us so much and it is amazing!

Here is a picture of us by the Book of Mormon play!

DAY AFTER MOTHER'S DAY SKYPE

Yes it was so great to talk to you yesterday! I am glad to see that everything is still going great at home! You basically already know everything that happened but I don't know if I ever told you that in Midway we got to see two investigators be baptized! Their names are Vicky and Jairo! It is so crazy how much they have changed in the last few months, especially Jairo! I had not seen them since I left and Jairo looked like a completely new person! The Gospel helped him so much! I just love their family so much! Here are some of the pictures! I love you Mom! Have a great day!

This last picture is with Omar and Idalia, they are members in Midway!

I AM REALLY EXHAUSTED!

Mom! I am glad that you had a great week! And I am sorry the pictures that I sent didn't go through, was it all three of them or just the last one? And that is so crazy that Andrea and Brette are engaged, and also that Rob is home!! That seems crazy to me that that is happening! It is so weird to see how fast things are going! I think it was last week that I got a wedding invitation from Elder Perez so it is crazy to see that people our age are getting married!! I feel like we are all still so young!

This week has been a pretty normal week though! Nothing super special happened that you haven’t heard but we did have quite a few new investigators come to church who we are working with so that was awesome! Other then that we are just on the missionary grind! I am really exhausted but I am just loving the work! Today we were invited by some other missionaries to go downtown with a recent convert of theirs for lunch so we are doing that.  After one of the member’s birthday is this week so we are going out for deep dish pizza with him! Sorry its kind of a boring email but we just wrote the other day! I love you mom and I hope that you have a great rest of your day!

For Mother’s Day we were thinking about 5 PM here time, would that work for you??

A SURPRISE LETTER

Sorry that I wasn't able to finish writing on Monday, we just got caught up with everything so we never really had time to write. But this week we had some amazing things happen.  So just like you know Elder Zacher and I will be staying together again and I am really happy that I get to stay here in this area. I feel like I have come to love this area so much only in the last few days! Just a few days before this transfer I was really hoping that I was going to get switched back to Spanish but just in this week I found so many reasons to love this area that I was taking for granted this whole time! I am just loving being out here in Chicago.  My favorite part of this week was that on Sunday I was able to go to the Liconas house for dinner and the Vazquez family came over! It honestly was such an amazing feeling to be with them and with the Liconas. I always love going to their house because there are two families that always come and then also la Hermana Alfonso.  It is always just a blast at their house and I have came to love it so very much! I cant wait for you to meet all of these families!! You will love them all so much!

So transfers were great! We only had 4 new missionaries come in so it felt so easy because it was so small and everything went smoothly! Then this morning we went and dropped of the departing missionaries at the airport.  It was pretty sad to see them go because I have served around all of the missionaries quite a bit and one of them, Elder Cuevas is like one of my best friends out here! It was shocking to me because normally when we drop the missionaries off it doesnt phase me because it is so far away but now it is all starting to become so real!

Aly is doing so amazing though! She texted us this week and told us that she just finished reading the Book of Mormon and that she prayed and pondered it and she felt really good about it! We are so excited for her and we just love her so much! We have a lesson with her tomorrow with our Bishop so that will be great!
I am loving it out here though Mom! I just wanted to thank you for everything you do! I am so grateful for you sending me that package and I am just grateful for you! I know that I dont tell you that nearly enough but I have just felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude for you today so thank you! I love you Mom and for all the love you share for me! I love you and I hope that you have a great day! :)

ps for Mothers Day I am not sure yet, but you dont need to change conducting because our church starts at 12:30 so we wouldnt be able to do it during then as well.

I'LL EMAIL YOU LATER . . . .

Mom! I just wanted to let you know that I am okay and doing great! Elder Zacher and I will be staying together again so that is sweet! Today we have the new missionaries coming in so I will write later because I don't have very much time right now! But I was just wondering if you could send me some benzaclin or however you spell that stuff? I love you mom and I will email you later!

We know it's transfer time when we see these two great young men in our office quite often.  The APs come in to help President Woodbury make decisions about transfers

THE LORD HAS GIVEN ME MORE THAN I COULD EVER WISH FOR...

This week was absolutely amazing! So on Monday when I got to see the Vazquez family - it was the best! I love their family so so much! We just went over to their house and they had pizza and we had an amazing lesson afterwards. I just feel the spirit so strongly in their house and I love them so much! The best part of it was that because I was there Elder Richards and I were able to teach the parents a lesson and Elder Randall was able to stay in and talk to the son and talk to him personally and the son totally opened up to him! They are starting to come together so much stronger as a family and they all came to church this week.

I had a lot more to tell you but today has been crazy so I have no time.   But I am okay here, the Lord is giving me more than I could ever wish for. Also, transfers are this week so for writing next week I am not sure how well I will be able to respond. I think that I may leave but I am not sure yet so I will let you know then.  I am sorry again for not being able to write but I love you more than anything mom!  Have a great week!
